SR-22

An SR-22 is a certificate of insurance. Basically it’s a vehicle liability insurance document required by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for high risk insurance policies. Most SR-22 documents are required by the DMV from a driver interested in reinstating his or her driving privileges following an uninsured car accident or conviction from a traffic related offense.

Who needs SR-22 insurance?
This may vary depending on the state where the person resides. However the most common circumstances when a DMV is required may include;
  • DUI or any severe moving violation
  • Accidents involving at fault uninsured drivers
  • When one is convicted of driving without insurance
  • Repeated traffic offenses
  • If you are owner of a uninsured car at the time of an accident
  • Reckless driving
  • Many driving tickets in a short period of time

Duration of an SR-22
The time to expect an SR-22 may vary from state to state depending of the committed traffic offense. The duration may be as short as one year to as long as five years.

Filing an SR-22

Filing an SR-22 is mostly done by the auto insurer. The auto insurer will submit your information to the state to have you car insurance coverage. If you just interested in a new insurance quote, you just need to mention the need for SR-22 filling.
